Ummul Kher’s story is an inspiring tale of resilience and determination that reaffirms the optimism of believing in oneself. Like many aspirants, she faced the challenge of UPSC exams, and emerged victorious overcoming all obstacles. Despite encountering several setbacks and failures, Ummul Kher refused to surrender to despair. Her story is inspirational to countless others who dare to dream and strive for greatness. 

Suffering from a bone disorder

At a very young age, Ummul Kher, born in Rajasthan, was diagnosed with a fragile bone disorder. She endured at least 16 fractures and underwent 8 surgeries due to the severe condition of the disease. Her father supported the family by selling clothes in a store, and it was financially straining to pay for the surgeries. Despite facing financial challenges and coping with her own health struggles, Ummul remained determined to achieve something significant in her life. 

Facing setbacks

Ummul Kher grew up in Trilokpuri, Delhi. To lessen the financial burden on her family, she offered tuition classes. Ummul’s mother passed away when she was in grade 9. Her father remarried, and her stepmother did not support in her education. Ummul made the difficult decision of leaving her house. She moved out and began living independently in Trilokpuri slums. 

Education

With support from Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust, Ummul completed her education. Ummul secured 91% in class 10 and 90% in class 12. She pursued her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Gargi College, DU, and further completed MA and MPhil degrees from JNU.

Becoming an IAS officer

Ummul successfully cleared NET JRF in 2013. This achievement enabled her to receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 25,000. She made history by getting selected in Japan’s International Leadership Training Programme. With this accomplishment, she became the fourth Indian in 18-year history to be selected for this programme. In 2016, Ummul cleared the UPSC exams in her first attempt. She secured 420th rank and became an IAS officer.
