Sundarban: Dr Farooq Hossain was born into a poor family and faced challenges during childhood. As he grew older, he nurtured a dream of helping others from financially weaker backgrounds. The region that he comes from is plagued by poverty and illiteracy. Let’s delve into his journey into a becoming a successful and inspiring doctor.

Background

Dr Farooq completed his schooling from Al Ameen Mission School, Howrah. He then went on to study medicine at Bankura Sammilani Medical College. He recalls that he earned a small sum of money during his internships. He saved all the money to establish Naba Diganta Mission Organization. Despite not owning property of his own, and living in a humble house, he prioritized investing in education and healthcare, believing it to be the foremost task at hand.

Free medical services

For the last decade, Dr Farooq Hossain has been offering free medical services to the residents of the Sundarban area of West Bengal. He faced significant challenges in gathering the funds for the endeavour. He and his team collect sample and unused medication from households and distribute them to those in need. Additionally, they have received donations of ECG, oxygen, sugar, and blood pressure monitoring machines, enabling them to provide healthcare services to the community.

Mega healthcare camps

Dr Farooq Hossain works in a makeshift shelter made from bamboo. Every Saturday, they organize mega camps where 300 to 500 patients receive treatment. He is supported by his friends in medicine. Many patients pay visits for dental and eye problems. Free dental and eye surgeries are also provided.

Support from volunteers

Dr Farooq mentions that people initially had varied opinions about their work, with some expressing ignorance and questioning its purpose. However, as time progressed, people began to understand and support their efforts, realizing the benefits it brings to the community. Presently, 150 school and college-going girls from the village actively participate as volunteers, forming the Swasthyabroti Girls Volunteers group. They have received basic training to perform tasks such as checking blood pressure, contributing to the healthcare initiatives.

Educating the youth

The Naba Diganta Mission was also launched with the objective of educating children in nearby villages. Presently, children from nursery to fourth grade receive education through this initiative. Free coaching is offered to girls studying in grades 9 and 10. This organization also offers free medical consultations to children.
