Her childhood was marked by significant challenges. She lost her father to cancer when she was just 14. Despite the difficulties that followed, her mother remained unwavering, raising Ilma and her younger brother alone and ensuring that Ilma had the opportunities she needed to thrive.

An outstanding achiever

Ilma completed her degree in Philosophy at St Stephen's College, Delhi University, before earning a scholarship to study at an international university in Paris. After that, she also successfully bagged a scholarship to attend the Oxford University. This experience not only expanded her outlook but also boosted her determination to achieve her goals. Ilma also had the opportunity of working in New York for a brief period before she decided to return home in India.

UPSC journey and success

Ilma’s journey then took a significant turn as she set her sights on the UPSC, ultimately succeeding in the 2017 Civil Services Examination with an impressive All India Rank of 217. Today, she serves as an IPS (Indian Police Service) officer, and her story transcends mere exam success; it embodies her resilience in the face of life's challenges and her unwavering self-belief. In an interview with media, she shared that her mother always encouraged her to be self-sufficient and follow her dreams, instilling in her the belief that she can overcome any challenge with genuine effort.
