It’s important to possess a valid driving license to practice driving on the roads in India. With new changes in the application process, this may be the right time for you to comfortably apply for one. The driving test is the most challenging aspect for any applicant. Passing this test is essential to obtain your driving license.

There are four types of driving licenses in India

•    Learner’s driving license: It is for those in the process of obtaining a permanent driving license.
•    Permanent driving license: Allows you to drive on Indian roads.
•    Commercial driving license: This is specifically for vehicles being used for commercial purposes.
•    International driving permit: Allows you to drive in international countries.

Learner’s license

The first phase of applying for a permanent driving license involves getting a learner’s license. No driving test is required for this license, but it limits you to driving only gearless car or scooter. For other vehicles, you will need to drive under the assistance of a permanent driver license holder.

Driving tests

A learning license is required before obtaining a permanent driver license. It allows you to learn to drive during this period. It remains valid for six months. After one month of obtaining a learner’s license, you can apply for a permanent one. Only when you pass the driving test, you receive your driving license. With the new changes in driving license rules, you can now give your driving test at a registered driving school instead of visiting an RTO.

Rules to follow

While driving with a learner’s license, you must adhere to some specific rules. You must display an ‘L’ on both the front and back of your vehicle. In Delhi, obtaining a driving license becomes somewhat easier. You can apply online, and easily schedule the test at RTO.
