Somali pirates' attempt to use a stolen merchant ship as a base for their operations was stopped by the Indian Navy. The MV Ruen was hijacked and was about 1,400 nautical miles off the coast of India. The Navy confirmed in a statement that all 17 crew members were successfully evacuated.
The Indian Navy carried out an outrageous operation to stop Somali pirates from using a pillaged cargo vessel as a "mother ship" to attack other ships.
The operation, carried out by marine commandos and the guided-missile destroyer INS Kolkata, resulted in the safe evacuation of 17 crew members from the hijacked bulk carrier MV Ruen, flying the flag of Malta, and the capture of 35 pirates.
The navy said that all 35 pirates on board the bulk cargo ship MV Ruen, flying the Maltese flag, had surrendered and that the ship had been inspected for the presence of illegal firearms, ammo, and contraband in a post on Saturday on the social media platform X.

The MV Ruen was taken over in December after leaving Somalian waters to serve as a base for attacks by pirates. The Navy acted in self-defense and to combat piracy, using the least amount of force necessary, when INS Kolkata intercepted the ship on Friday, even though several pirates opened fire.
The crew's safe escape was made possible by cornering and forcing the pirates to surrender.
Commander Vivek Madhwal, a Navy spokesman, stated that "INS Kolkata, through coordinated actions, successfully trapped and coerced all 35 pirates to surrender and secured the safe evacuation of 17 crew members from the pirate vessel this afternoon without any losses."
The Navy stated on Friday that after a cargo ship flying the flag of Bangladesh was taken over, an Indian destroyer and a long-range maritime patrol aircraft helped the hijacked ship.
According to the report, the safety of the crew members taken prisoner by the armed pirates was determined, and the Indian Navy cruiser stayed in close proximity to the ship till it entered Somalian territorial seas.
Earlier this month, the Indian Navy stopped a plot to steal an Iranian-flagged fishing boat off the east coast of Somalia. The crew consisted of eight Pakistani and eleven Iranian citizens.
After pirates attacked their Iranian-flagged fishing vessel on the east coast of Somalia in January, the Indian destroyer INS Sumitra saved the lives of the 19 Pakistani crew members.
