The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon progresses into various parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Konkan, and Pune.

In Mumbai, the monsoon arrived two days earlier than its usual date of June 11, as reported by the weather department.

On June 9 and 10, the IMD predicts severe to very heavy rainfall, with sporadic periods of exceptionally heavy rain across the south Konkan, Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra, coastal regions, and north interior Karnataka.

A RED ALERT has been issued for heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), with an orange alert for Ratnagiri, and a yellow alert for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad.

There is a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204mm in 24 hours) over coastal Karnataka, Konkan, and Madhya Maharashtra until Monday, with heavy showers expected to continue over these regions throughout the upcoming week.

These areas will remain under an ‘orange’ alert until Tuesday, as monsoon activity is anticipated to persist throughout the week.

Due to heavy showers, a portion of the road in the Palghar district of Maharashtra collapsed, disrupting traffic on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway for over four hours on Sunday morning.

Over the past 24 hours, Mumbai and neighboring areas have experienced heavy rains, bringing relief from the hot and humid weather.

Various other districts of Maharashtra, including Thane, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Satara, and Jalgaon, have also received significant rainfall.

Mumbai recorded over 60 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, with the Colaba observatory reporting 67 mm and the Santacruz observatory recording 64 mm during the same period.

Overnight rains in the Thane and Palghar districts caused certain areas to become flooded and there were reports of tree branches falling in Thane city. Over the course of the 24 hours that ended at 8:30 am on Sunday, Thane city saw 37.06 mm of rainfall.

Despite heavy rainfall, there have been no reports of any untoward incidents in Palghar, as confirmed by district disaster control cell chief Vivekanand Kadam.
