The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) has elected a Dalit president from parties sponsored by the left-leaning group for the first time in over thirty years. The ABVP, which is associated with the RSS, lost to the United Left panel, which won the JNUSU elections handily.

Eight individuals competed for the position of president, out of the 19 candidates who competed for positions on the JNUSU central panel.

Dhananjay defeated Umesh Chandra Ajmeera of the ABVP by 922 votes.In the race for vice president, Avijit Ghosh (left) defeated Deepika Sharma (ABVP) by 927 votes. 
Arjun Anand of the ABVP lost to Priyanshi Arya of the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association in the contest for general secretary by 926 votes, with support from the Left, and in the contest for joint secretary, Mohammad Sajid of the Left defeated Govind Dangi of the ABVP by 508 votes.

Who is Dhananjay?
Dhananjay is a PhD candidate at the School of Arts and Aesthetics and a native of Gaya, Bihar. Dhananjay is the first Dalit president of JNUSU to hold the office since 1996's Batti Lal Bairwa. With his victory, Dhananjay becomes the first left-leaning Dalit president since Batti Lal Bairwa in 1996–1997.

Reiterating the commitment to protect students' rights and listen to their concerns, he highlighted the faith that the United Left alliance has earned. The safety of women on campus, funding reductions, promoting increases in scholarships, and addressing the water and infrastructure challenges are among the top concerns of the recently elected JNUSU.

Dhananjay promised to get to work on these urgent problems, demonstrating the student union's dedication to helping. Cheering "Lal Salaam" and "Jai Bhim," supporters of the United Left coalition—which included AISA, DSF, SFI, and AISF—celebrated the win with great enthusiasm.

Expectations are high for significant progress on the above priorities when the new administration takes office, reflecting the goals of the JNU student body.
