The inspiring story of IPS Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, who was the inspiration behind Vinod Chopra's hit film 12th Fail, grossed over Rs. 69 crore worldwide. Manoj's heartening story also got the Filmfare award for Best Film and has reached millions of people with authenticity and passion.

On March 15, Manoj posted on his Twitter announcing his promotion and expressing appreciation to all. He wrote, "The journey that started from ASP has reached today to become IG by the order of the Government of India. Heartfelt gratitude to everyone for supporting me in this long journey."

Manoj Sharma had many obstacles and difficulties during his journey. He comes from a poor family in Morena, Madhya Pradesh. He failed in all subjects in class 12th except Hindi. He fell for a girl named Shraddha Joshi and after much deliberation, he proposed to her and to his surprise she said yes. This was the turning point in his life and he decided to prepare for the UPSC exam, one of the hardest exams in India.

He was unsuccessful in his first three attempts but he did not give up and finally cracked the exam in his fourth attempt with an All India Rank of 121. He struggled a lot, had to sleep on pavements many times, did numerous odd jobs, and worked at a library in Delhi, which eventually helped him prepare for his exam.
