Indian summers are getting hotter and hotter thanks to climate change. We cannot ignore this fact, but we can make efforts to learn about the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and take precautions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe this summer.

The Ministry of Health recently made a post on X (formerly Twitter) providing information about the symptoms of heat-related illness and how to take proper precautions to combat them. The post read, “Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses! Be alert, and take preventive measures - #Heatstroke is a time-sensitive medical emergency. #BeatTheHeat”

Below are some symptoms of heat-related illnesses and precautions to help combat them.

  • Hot, red, and dry skin: If you experience these symptoms seek shade immediately and hydrate your body.
  • Throbbing headache: Move to a cool area, remove or loosen tight clothes and apply cold water to the skin.
  • High body temperature (above 40 degrees Celcius): Drink cool fluids and take rest in front of a cooler or AC.
  • Nauseous and vomiting: Remove unnecessary layers of clothing, apply an ice pack or cool towel and drink water.
  • Muscle weakness or cramps: Rest from strenuous activity, drink water and move near a fan and shade.
  • Rapid shallow breathing and fast heart rate: Monitor condition closely, loosen tight clothes and drink water.
  • Anxiety and dizziness: Drink cool water and lie down in front of a cooler or an AC.
  • Heat rash: Take a cool shower and wear light cotton clothes to avoid skin irritation.

Symptoms may vary, but it's important to keep your body hydrated and cool. Take proper precautions against the heat and seek health professionals for better care.
