This comes close on the heels of Rahul Gandhi’s proposal to resign as party chief, taking responsibility for the 2019 poll debacle, which was summarily not just rejected by the Congress Working Committee (CWC), but he was also persuaded to lead from the helm by sister Priyanka Vadra
New Delhi: A mother has handed out to her son the certificate of excellence even as the task given to him was not even half done. This is what happened at the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meet on Saturday as Sonia Gandhi was yet again chosen to lead the CPP.
Even as the Congress saw a holistic rout in 2019 elections, getting just 52 seats in Lok Sabha — this 17th Lok Sabha will be the second consecutive time when there will be no official Opposition as the Congress failed to get the requisite 10% of the total strength — Sonia Gandhi lauded son Rahul for his leadership.
In her speech, she said that Rahul Gandhi led the party “from the front and with dynamism”.

In turn, the son also congratulated his mother on the re-election as the party’s leader.
Congratulations to Smt Sonia Gandhi on being elected Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party. Under her leadership, the Congress will prove to be a strong & effective opposition party, that will fight to defend the Constitution of India. pic.twitter.com/iUcdB51tHE

Sonia Gandhi’s name was proposed by former UPA prime minister Manmohan Singh and seconded by Jharkhand MP Jothimani S and Kerala MP K Sudhakaran.
The Congress would also not elect the new leader of the party in Lok Sabha, but Sonia Gandhi would nominate her: the CPP also authorised her to just pick one from among the 52 MPs.
This comes close on the heels of Rahul Gandhi’s proposal to resign as party chief, taking responsibility for the 2019 poll debacle, which was summarily not just rejected by the Congress Working Committee (CWC), but he was also persuaded to lead from the helm by sister Priyanka Vadra.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi seemed enthusiastic about the role his MPs would play in making the “jump every day”. “We are 52 MPs. I guarantee you that these 52 MPs will fight against BJP every single inch. We are enough to make BJP jump every day.”
“Every Congress member must remember that each one of you is fighting for the Constitution, for every person in India irrespective of the colour of his skin or belief,” Rahul Gandhi said.
