Ganesh Baraiya did not lose hope when rejected admission to medical college due to his small stature. He fought against the odds, got admitted in 2019, and has completed his MBBS.
A 22-year-old from Bhavnagar, Gujarat made history when he completed his MBBS, despite all the challenges life threw at it. Dr. Ganesh Barariya is a 3-foot-tall doctor who did not give up on his dreams and became an inspiration to millions out there. He started his MBBS in 2019 and is currently doing an internship at Sir-T Hospital, Bhavnagar.
Dr. Ganesh is just 3 feet tall and weighs 18 kg due to dwarfism. It also causes locomotive disability, a disability that restricts the movement of limbs, which affects 72% of his body. He has a mature take on all this and does not let these problems stop him.
Ganesh was a good student and had 83% in class 12 and scored 233 in NEET. Initially, when he applied for the medical college he was rejected by the Medical Council of India due to his small stature. They said that his disability might not make him apt for handling emergencies.
Not knowing what to do, Ganesh took his school principal's help and took the case to the Gujarat High Court with two other differently-abled candidates. When the High Court did not decide in their favour, Ganesh and the other two candidates, turned to the Supreme Court in 2018, where they won the case and Ganesh was admitted to Government Medical College at Bhavnagar in 2019.
Dr. Ganesh still has days when patients get shocked when they look at him. They hesitate at first and doubt his credibility, but slowly they get used to it and get comfortable. "Whenever patients see me they are a bit startled at first but then they accept me and I also accept their initial behaviour. They behave with me cordially and with positivity. They become happy as well," he said.
