Mumbai: Rizwan Kaskar, nephew of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, has been arrested from the Mumbai international airport on Wednesday night (July 17).
Kaskar was trying to flee the country when Mumbai Police swooped in on him and made the arrest in connection with an extortion case.
Rizwan is the son of Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar.
An official from the Mumbai crime branch was quoted as saying that two days ago Mumbai Police's anti-extortion cell arrested Ahmed Raza Wadharia who is a close aide of Dawood's gang member Fahim Machmach, in an extortion case.
"During his interrogation, Rizwan Kaskar's name cropped up. Based on the information, a trap was laid and he was detained at the Mumbai international airport on Wednesday night when he was trying to escape from the country," he said.
He was placed under arrest after detailed interrogation, the official added.
Mumbai crime branch is also working on the deportation of Dawood’s other nephew Sohail Kaskar. The process is likely to be completed soon so the custody can be expected within a week or 10 days. Sohail has been booked in two cases related to cheating and extortion.
His aide Danish Ali is already in Mumbai police custody. Sohail is the son of Dawood’s brother Noora who died in 2010. Sohail and his aide Danish were arrested in Spain in 2014 by US authorities on narco-terror charges. Danish is in Mumbai Police’s custody. He was deported from the US on November 15 last year.
Sohail has been booked in two cases related to cheating and extortion. Danish had left India and moved to Dubai in 2001 where he teamed up with Sohail to operate a diamond smuggling ring. The two attempted to enter Russia but Danish was denied a visa, an official said.
