Discover the essence of Sawan with Singhare Ka Halwa, a traditional Indian dessert blending water chestnut flour, ghee, and aromatic spices for a festive indulgence.
As the monsoon descends upon us, bringing with it cool breezes and a touch of festive fervor, it's the perfect time to indulge in seasonal delights that complement the spirit of the season. One such culinary gem that graces our tables during this time is Singhare Ka Halwa, a traditional Indian dessert made from water chestnut flour. This Sawan specialty not only satisfies the taste buds but also holds cultural significance, often enjoyed during fasting periods and festivals like Navratri.
Ingredients:
Singhare Ka Atta (Water Chestnut Flour) - 1 cup
Ghee (Clarified Butter) - 1/2 cup
Sugar - 3/4 cup (adjust to taste)
Milk - 2 cups
Chopped Nuts (Almonds, Cashews, Pistachios) - 1/4 cup
Raisins - 2 tbsp
Cardamom Powder - 1/2 tsp
Saffron Strands (optional) - a pinch
Water - 1/2 cup
Method:
Prepare the Sugar Syrup:
In a saucepan, heat water and sugar together until the sugar dissolves completely. Set aside.
Prepare the Halwa:
In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee over medium-low heat.
Add Singhare Ka Atta (Water Chestnut Flour) and roast it in the ghee until it turns golden brown and starts to release a nutty aroma. This step is crucial as it enhances the flavor of the halwa.
Cooking the Halwa:
Once the flour is roasted, slowly add the milk while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
Cook the mixture until it thickens and starts pulling away from the sides of the pan.
Adding Flavor and Texture:
Stir in the sugar syrup gradually, mixing well to incorporate it into the halwa.
Add cardamom powder and saffron strands (if using) for added fragrance and flavor.
Final Touches:
In a separate small pan, lightly roast the chopped nuts and raisins in a teaspoon of ghee until the nuts turn golden brown and the raisins plump up.
Add the roasted nuts and raisins to the halwa mixture, reserving a few for garnish.
Serve:
Transfer the Singhare Ka Halwa to a serving dish. Garnish with the remaining roasted nuts and raisins.
Serve hot or warm, as desired. Enjoy the rich, nutty flavors and the comforting sweetness of this Sawan special dessert.
