Notably, during the 1999 Lok Sabha elections in Gurdaspur, Punjab, Malini campaigned for BJP candidate Vinod Khanna, a former Bollywood actor.

Formally joining the BJP in February 2004, Malini's political journey saw her nominated by then-President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to serve as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009. She assumed the role of general secretary of the BJP in March 2010, with endorsement from Ananth Kumar, the party's national secretary, in February 2011.
