Mumbai: Amid rising curiosity about his absence from the polling booth on Monday and speculations regarding his citizenship, Akshay Kumar decided to take to social media to answer all questions. On Friday, the actor took to Twitter to issue a statement where he clearly mentioned that he is a Canadian citizen. The actor further said that he has never hidden the fact that he is a Canadian passport holder. However, he stated that he has not visited Canada in the last seven years and he works and pays his taxes in India. Akshay also mentioned that his citizenship is “a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others.”

The Kesari actor wrote, “I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India. While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others. I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”

Ever since Bollywood actors cast their vote in Mumbai on Monday and shared pictures flaunting their fingers on social media, Akshay Kumar’s absence from the polling booth has been the talk of the town. All the more because Akshay had tweeted asking Indian citizens to cast their vote in the Loksabha elections. Replying to a tweet by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the actor had tweeted a few days back, “Well said @narendramodi ji. The true hallmark of a democracy lies in people’s participation in the electoral process. Voting has to be a superhit prem katha between our nation and its voters :)”

Also, recently, the actor grabbed eyeballs due to his “non-political” interview of the PM ahead of the elections. After all these, when people started speculating about the reasons for his absence from the polling booth, Akshay Kumar decided to dodge the question asked by journalists. At an event this week, when questioned about the same, the actor told the mediapersons “Chaliye Chaliye (let’s go)” and walked away. Even though Kumar did not want to open up on the topic, the video went viral in no time and increased people’s curiosity even more. Hence, the actor took to social media to remind everyone that he is a Canadian passport holder.

On the work front, Kumar was last seen in Kesari, which entered the 150-crore club at the box office. He has a bunch of movies coming up by next year, which include his home production Mission Mangal, Housefull 4, Good News and Sooryavanshi.
