Maharishi Valmiki authored the Ramayana, the epic that chronicles the life of Lord Rama, as directed by Brahma. His epic poem, ‘Shrimad Valmiki Ramayana’, is regarded as one of the world's oldest poems, earning him the esteemed title of Adi Kavi (First Poet of India). According to the Puranas, Valmiki attained the status of Maharishi through years of rigorous penance. Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated on Ashwin Purnima to celebrate his contributions and teachings.

Valmiki was born to Varuna (Aditya), the ninth son of Kashyapa and Aditi. His mother was Charshani, and he was a member of the Bhrigu lineage. The Upanishads state that he possessed knowledge equal to that of Bhrigu. One day, while meditating, a mound of termites formed around him. When he finally emerged from it, he was given the name Valmiki.

After witnessing a hunter kill a Krauncha bird, Valmiki was overcome with anger and cursed the hunter. In that moment of rage, a verse spontaneously flowed from his lips. Brahma then appeared before him, declaring that this verse was divinely inspired. He instructed Valmiki to narrate the entire life story of Rama in verse form, which ultimately led to the creation of the epic Ramayana.

The Ramayana

The Ramayana, or Shrimad Valmiki Ramayana, consists of around 24,000 verses and is divided into seven Kandas (books). It tells the story of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, his brother Lakshmana, and the challenges they face, including the abduction of Sita by the demon king Ravana. The epic explores themes of duty, honour, love, and the struggle between good and evil. Valmiki's portrayal of characters, especially Sita, has had a lasting impact on Indian culture and literature.

After Lord Rama abandoned Sita, she took refuge in Valmiki's ashram, where she lived for several years and gave birth to her twin sons, Luv and Kush. During this time, she was referred to as Van Devi. Valmiki's significance is on par with that of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and other key figures from the epic. Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated on Ashwin Purnima every year.
