Meaning of the words

On the day of Gudi Padwa, Maharashtrian families create a structure by placing a kalash (pot or a round vessel) on top of a stick; this is hoisted as a flag. This structure is known as Gudi, and the word literally translates to ‘flag.’

The term ‘Padwa’ refers to the first date of both Shukla and Krishna Paksha in the Hindu lunar calendar. The Hindu New Year begins on the first date of Chaitra Shukla, and this day is celebrated as Gudi Padwa. 

How is it celebrated

People celebrate Gudi Padwa by wearing new clothes and following the tradition of eating neem leaves with mishri. A special dish prepared on this occasion is Puran Poli. Family, friends, and neighbours exchange greetings and well-wishes.
