World Metrology Day, also known as the Convention du Mètre, was first observed in 1985 during the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) to ensure that everyone utilized the same metric system to measure weight and length to promote fair commerce.
The metric system was formed, and the International Prototype of the Kilogramme (IPK) was chosen as the standard unit of mass during the convention, as well as the International Prototype of the Metre (IPM) as the standard unit of length measurement.
The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) collaborate to support the day.
UNESCO's governing bodies determined that May 20 will now be celebrated as World Metrology Day (42).
