Every year on May 20, the world celebrates World Metrology Day to better grasp the essence of measurement science and why we rely so heavily on it.

The day celebrates the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which laid the groundwork for international collaboration in measuring science and the preservation of global measurement uniformity.

The establishment of a standardized measurement system is critical, and its consistent use around the world provides accuracy and precision. The measurement system in place has a significant impact on many areas, including commerce, industry, transportation, water resources, and others.

Theme of the year:
The theme for World Metrology Day 2024 is 'Sustainability', which urges us to investigate how metrology improves our lives on a daily basis.

The theme emphasizes metrology's critical role, reminds us of our shared obligation to protect our world, and inspires us to investigate metrology's contribution to enhancing our lives daily.

History:
World Metrology Day, also known as the Convention du Mètre, was first observed in 1985 during the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) to ensure that everyone utilized the same metric system to measure weight and length to promote fair commerce.

The metric system was formed, and the International Prototype of the Kilogramme (IPK) was chosen as the standard unit of mass during the convention, as well as the International Prototype of the Metre (IPM) as the standard unit of length measurement.

The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) collaborate to support the day.
UNESCO's governing bodies determined that May 20 will now be celebrated as World Metrology Day (42).

Significance:
World Metrology Day emphasizes the importance of metrology, or the study of measurement, in a variety of fields such as business, commerce, and daily life.

Metrology is particularly essential since it contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations' attempts to promote sustainable global development.
Accurate measurements aid in understanding and addressing complex environmental challenges such as pollution, resource depletion, and climate change and serve as the foundation for environmental research and policymaking.
