Tokyo: The powerful typhoon Trami battered Japan's southern island of Okinawa on Saturday, following landfall. At least five people have been injured as the storm ripped through the Japanese archipelago.
The country’s meteorological department has warned of more destruction over the weekend and asked people to secure property and be vigilant.
Typhoon Trami, which was initially categorised as category 3 typhoon but was downgraded to category 2, pummelled the island as trees were uprooted and massive waves splashed on breakwaters. The public broadcaster NHK said that electricity was cut for more than 121,000 homes.
Around 600 people were evacuated to shelters in Okinawa.
At least 386 flights were cancelled by Japan's main two airlines JAL and ANA.
Record rains had hit western Japan earlier this year and the country sweltered through one of the hottest summers ever.
Also in September, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake rocked the northern island of Hokkaido, sparking landslides and leaving more than 40 people dead.
