Meet Jayshree Ullal and Neerja Sethi: Indian-origin women on Forbes list of America's richest self-made women

Two Indian-origin technology executives have made it to the Forbes' list of America's 60 richest self-made women in 2018, alongside Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Celine Dion, Beyonce and Kylie Jenner.

Jayshree Ullal and Neerja Sethi secured the 18th position, with 1.3 billion dollars’ net worth, and 21st position, with a billion dollars’ net worth, respectively. 

Jayshree Ullal

Jayshree Ullal, who was born in London, was raised in in New Delhi. After finishing school here, she went to San Francisco State University and became an engineering graduate. She further went to to Santa Clara University to finish her master's degree in engineering management.

Ullal has been the president and CEO of Arista Networks since 2008 and owns about 5% of its stock. The publicly-traded company recorded revenues of $1.6 billion in 2017.

The company has also been embroiled in a legal battle over alleged patent infringement with Cisco, Ullal's former employer.

The now 57-year-old businesswoman has received several honours. She ranked No. 2 in Top 25 Disrupters of 2014 list by CRN, ranked No. 3 in Top 25 Disrupters of 2015 list by CRN and ranked No. 9 in the 30 Most Impressive Female Engineers Alive Today list by Best Computer Science Degrees.

Neerja Sethi 

Neerja Sethi and her husband Bharat Desai together founded IT consulting and outsourcing firm Syntel in 1980 in their apartment in Troy, Michigan.

She now works as the vice president of the company.

According to Forbes, the company started out with an initial investment of just $2,000 and in the first-year sales, they pulled in a mere $30,000.

In 2017, Syntel racked up $924 million revenues and has 23,000 employees, 80% of whom are in India.

Others

Diane Hendricks, who owns the Hendricks Holding Company, has topped the list of America's 60 richest self-made women. She is followed by Marian Ilitch and Judy Faulkner. 

21-year-old Kylie Jenner, who ranked 27, is the youngest to be featured in the list.
