Congress' Anand Sharma has said PM Narendra Modi has violated the time-honoured principle of Indian foreign policy of not interfering in the domestic elections of another country. Following this incident, BJP has hit back at Congress saying Modi has neither endorsed nor promoted the President of United States Donald Trump at the Howdy Modi event

New Delhi: Congress Rajya Sabha MP Anand Sharma had hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that he is in the USA as India's Prime Minister and not as a star campaigner in the elections there.

"Reminding you that you are in the USA as our Prime Minister and not a star campaigner in US elections," Sharma tweeted on late Sunday night (September 22).

In another tweet, Sharma said that Prime Minister Modi has violated the time-honoured principle of Indian foreign policy of not interfering in the domestic elections of another country.

His tweet read: "Mr Prime Minister, you have violated the time-honoured principle of Indian foreign policy of not interfering in the domestic elections of another country. This is a singular disservice to the long-term strategic interests of India."

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson K Krishna Saagar Rao has hit back at Congress for its remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rao said PM Modi has neither endorsed nor promoted the President of United States Donald Trump at the Howdy Modi event, as being alleged by few.

He added that in the process of introducing POTUS, PM Modi has referred to President Donald Trump's Hindi slogan from his 2016 US election campaign. PM Modi only made that language reference in the context and backdrop of the massive NRI congregation.

President Donald Trump, during his 2016 election campaign, attended an NRI congregation organised by Republican Hindu Coalition at New Jersey. During which, he recorded a promotional campaign tagline in Hindi similar to that of 2014 BJP election campaign 'Abki bar Modi Sarkar'. Donald Trump in his own words has stated, 'Abki bar, Trump Sarkar.'
PM Narendra Modi has just made that reference, he did not make any promotional statement, Rao added.
