United States President Donald Trump has wondered if Democrats would go after mosques in the same way they did against churches during Easter
Bengaluru: United States President Donald Trump has wondered if Democrats would go after mosques in the same way they did against churches during Easter.
He was referring to the limit on congregation owing to the coronavirus spread.
The reference was also done in the context of the holy Ramzan starting this April 23.
The President Trump also retweeted a post by a conservative author, Paul Sperry, who wrote: “Let’s see if authorities enforce the social-distancing orders for mosques during Ramadan (April 23 – May 23) like they did churches during Easter.”
He said Democrats “go after Christian churches but they don’t tend to go after mosques.”
To a reporter’s question in this regard, Trump replied:
‘I just had a call with imams. I just had a call with ministers, rabbis. We had a tremendous call with the faith leaders. No, I don’t think that at all. I am someone that believes in faith. And it matters not what your faith is but our politicians seem to treat different faiths very differently.”
The President rued that Christianity is not treated well.
He said, “And they seem to think and I don’t know what happened with our country, but the Christian faith is treated much differently than it was, and I think it’s treated very unfairly.”
Daily Mail notes that during this past Easter holiday, states including Kansas, Kentucky, and others banned worshippers from attending church services due to the risk of spreading the virus.
But Republicans and their supporters on the religious right accused Democratic lawmakers and governors of infringing on their constitutional right to freely worship.
A federal judge in Kansas issued a temporary restraining order blocking Governor Laura Kelly’s executive order limiting the size of church gatherings to no more than 10 people.
US District Judge John Broomes, a Trump appointee, said that Kelly’s orders “expressly restrict religious activity.”
