Bengaluru: Economics professor in Bengaluru, Dr Rajesh has an organic terrace garden in his house in which plants are grown on the terrace floor and not in pots. While he waters the plants every day, the water that is not absorbed by the plants drains through the soil and collects in a tank. The water is reused the next day for gardening. According to him, the reused water has all the nutrients necessary for the plants.
Rajesh has innovated terrace gardening by mixing potted plants along with plants grown in soil on the floor of the terrace. He made this possible by waterproofing the terrace and then layering it with a mixture of soil and micro-fibre. The mixture allows draining of extra water and not soil.
This initiative by Rajesh has won the Water Warrior Challenge, a MyNation initiative to find the best way to save water.
