Tamil Nadu fisherwomen risk their lives; use traditional method to catch shrimps

Rameswaram: While several Tamil Nadu fishermen hit open water for fishing, the women belonging to the fishing community use their bare hands to catch shrimps from the seabed.

Speaking to reporters, a woman from the community said that the women catch shrimps only for domestic purpose and not for sale. She added that they are practicing their traditional form of fishing where they do not follow any other method to catch shrimps.

Though there are many threats to women while several venomous creatures live on the seabed, these women do not wear any safety gadgets to save themselves from the poisonous fishes.
