Trichy: 23-year-old Ramya was set ablaze by a youth with whom she had allegedly been in a relationship, at her flat in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy.
According to police, Thavaselvan, a 27-year-old private firm employee, barged into Ramya’s apartment and began to pick a fight with her about why she was ignoring him.
When the argument turned fierce, Ramya’s roommate rushed out to find help. Upon realising the roommate’s absence, Thavaselvan pulled out a bottle of petrol and set her ablaze with a lighter.
Raising an alarm, Ramya immediately ran to the bathroom and tried to douse the fire with water, but she sustained nearly 40 percent burns. She was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital by her roommate and the landlord, police said.
Initial investigation revealed that Ramya, a divorcee, was in a relationship with the youth, but had started avoiding him of late, police added.
The police have registered a case and are searching for the accused, who is absconding.
