Madurai: Tamil litterateurs and several other associations in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai came out in protests alleging a “Sanskritisation move” in erecting a statue of Tamil Thai (mother of Tamil) at the World Tamil Sangam.
Hundreds of people marched from Tiruvalluvar statue on Panagal Road to the Collectorate in order to submit a petition to the collector. However, the police prevented them.
The protestors stated that the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (Poompuhar) was chosen to design and erect the statue. They also stated that was an announcement that the place would resemble the Trevi Fountain in Italy. The protestors questioned the need for designs inspired by foreign countries. They demanded it to be made out of stone.
The protestors were detained by police at a marriage hall till the late hours of Monday (June 17).
