Thiruvananthapuram: The National Institute of Virology has identified the presence of deadly Nipah virus in 12 fruit bats out of the 36 samples tested at the institute. The medical department had collected hundreds of sputum samples of fruit bats from different parts of Kerala. The Virology Institute is yet to confirm the exact location where the virus surfaced.
A year ago, Nipah virus had claimed 18 lives in Kerala’s Kozhikode. The second outbreak of Nipah virus occurred on June 4, when Pune’s National Institute of Virology had confirmed that the Kerala youth, who was admitted to a private hospital in Ernakulam with high fever for 10 days, is affected by the Nipah virus.
