Thrissur: Around 100 people were diagnosed with jaundice in Thrissur, Kerala. The health department has intensified efforts to control the spread of the disease.

The cause of jaundice is reportedly due to the usage of adulterated ice blocks in drinks served at weddings and other functions. Many ice factories in the state are reportedly unaware of hygienic practices that need to be followed.

Health workers inspected juice parlours, bakeries, and restaurants in the area, and three of them were served notices under the Public Health Act.

With an aim to control the disease, the health department conducted awareness programmes in the district. The health department also has issued strict rules to people to drink only boiled water and not keep food out in the open.

The department also instructed those diagnosed with jaundice to not engage in preparing or serving food.
