Farmers march to Bengaluru to protest Karnataka govt’s intent to amend Land Acquisition Act

Bengaluru: A group of farmers from North Karnataka are on their way to Bengaluru to stage a protest. The farmers who will march to the city are in opposition to the state government’s move to amend the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act which would allegedly make it easier for the government to encroach on their land.

Meanwhile, farmers of Bagalkot district gathered at Hungund and blocked the national highway near the town. They sloganeered and urged authorities to fulfil their demands. Karnataka State Farmers Association and Hasiru Sene (Green Army) organised the protest. The farmers went shirtless to garner people’s attention. They shouted slogans opposing the government’s move to amend provisions in the act and also demanded water supply to various regions of North Karnataka.

Farmers had called for a bandh on June 10, but this has not disrupted daily proceedings in the state. Protests were held at Devanahalli, Nelamangala en route to Bengaluru.
