The Elephanta Caves in Mumbai is a huge tourist attraction. Every year thousands of people from across the country and the world visit the cave. In 1987, the Elephanta Caves in their entirety and the forested areas around them were declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legislation to shield the Elephanta Caves has existed since the 1950s, but the state government has turned a blind eye leading to the degradation of the spectacular carvings in the caves.
