Youth Olympics 2018: Tushar Mane, Tababi Devi win silver medals as India open account

Buenos Aires: India won two medals, both silver, on the opening day of Youth Olympic Games here. Tushar Mane opened the nation’s account in shooting, and Tababi Devi Thangjam secured the second position in judo. She became the first judoka to win a medal for the country at the Olympics junior or senior.

Tababi Devi managed to confirm her position for a silver medal as she advanced to the final for the women’s 44kg category on Sunday after Mane won the silver medal in the men’s 10m air rifle. Maria Gimenez from Venezuela defeated Devi to clinch the gold medal.

Tababi Devi from Manipur, who was the 2017 Asian Cadet Champion, lost to Gimenez 0-2.

Gimenez is a Pan American Under-18 Championships gold medalist. She scored 1-0 on the ippon, 1-0 on waza-ari and Tababi Devi ended up receiving one penalty point.

India has sent its largest ever contingent of 46 athletes to participate in 13 disciplines. The Games conclude on October 18.

In the last edition, the nation won two medals (silver and bronze) in Nanjing, China.
