Wrestler Vinesh Phogat won gold at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid on Sunday, conceding just one point in five bouts en route to the title victory in the women's 50kg freestyle category. The 23-year-old outclassed Canada's Natasha Fox 10-0 in the final.
The Aamir Khan starrer Dangal made the Phogat sisters a household name! Vinesh Phogat, cousin of star wrestlers Geeta Kumari Phogat and Babita Kumari, wrestled a gold in the Spain Grand Prix in Madrid on Sunday. She claimed the top spot in the women’s freestyle 50kg category in a fashion which saw her concede merely one point in all her five bouts.
The 24-year-old wrestler defeated Natasha Fox in the 50 kg category winning impressively 10-0 in the first period itself. This run has been remarkable for the Indian wrestler since she has won all of her matches except one because of technical superiority. She started early on by a 10-0 win over Mexico’s Mariana Diaz in the qualification round; followed by a 12-1 win over Erin Golston from the USA to reach the quarterfinals.
She won 5-0 against Valeria Chepsarakova of Russia and faced Jessie Macdonald of Canada in the semi-finals and registered a 10-0 win that was strangely reminiscent of Commonwealth Games 2018 final. And finally, Vinesh faced Fox in the Finals where she registered a 10-0 win.
This win would act like a confidence booster for Vinesh before Asian Games 2018 which will be held in Indonesia from August 18 who is gearing up to participate in the Yasar Dogu tournament in Turkey on July 28-29.
