Five-time US Open winner Federer beat Frenchman Benoit Paire to set up a third round clash against Nick Kyrgios.

New York: Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic won their respective second rounds at the US Open on August 30 and proceeded to the third round.

Five-time US Open winner Federer beat Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a third round clash against Nick Kyrgios.

Agence France-Presse quoted Federer as saying, "I think it's always tricky against Benoit, never quite the same point. Sometimes he plays very deep in the court, then he plays up in the court."

Nick Kyrgios found himself in the middle of a controversy for no fault of his thanks to match umpire Mohamed Lahyani. Twenty-three-year-old Kyrgios beat France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 6-0.

Lahyani lost his patience with Kyrgios. The Australian was on his way to an early exit after he lost the first set and was trailing by a break in the second set. Lahyani got down from his chair to give him some pep-talk. "I want to help you. This isn't you. I know that. You are great for tennis," Lahyani could be heard as saying according to Agence France-Presse.

Kyrgios's opponent Herbert was furious and said that umpire was not Kyrgios's coach and did not have to tell what he should do.

Djokovic beat Tennys Sandgren of US in four sets to head to the third round.
