India’s Smriti Mandhana blazed her way into the record books by smashing an 18-ball half century in the KIA Super League women’s Twenty20 tournament in England on Sunday (29 July).

Mandhana's knock is the joint fastest T20 fifty of all time in women’s cricket. This is also the quickest half ton in KIA Super League. Her innings of 52 not out off 19 for Western Storm, contained five fours and four sixes, against Loughborough Lightning. She won the Player-of-the-match award.

Post this feat, Mandhana now shares the record for fastest fifty in women’s T20 with Sophie Devine of New Zealand. Devine did it against India in Bengaluru in 2015.

Sunday’s match was reduced to six overs per side due to rain and Mandhana, opening the batting, gave a blazing start to her team. Western Storm posted 85/2 in six overs and successfully defended it to win by 18 runs at Taunton.

Mandhana is the first Indian to feature in England’s flagship T20 tournament. The left-hander announced her arrival in the league with an explosive 48 off 20 against Yorkshire Diamonds. That innings was studded with five sixes and three boundaries.

The 22-year-old Indian has been in outstanding form this year. She scored a half century off 25 balls against England in March, bettering her own performance of 50 from 30. She also captained the Trailblazers against Supernovas in the one-off IPL exhibition game in May.

So far for India, she has tallied 826 runs from 40 T20Is with a high score of 76 and 1,464 runs in 41 ODIs at an average of 37.53 with a career best of 135. She has also played two Tests scoring 81 runs with a best of 51.
