The England series has been particularly tough for India. In the 5-match series, India is already down by 0-2. Keeping this in mind, the third test is crucial since this would be the first time under the captaincy of Virat Kohli that India stands the risk of losing a series by such a heavy margin.
However, veteran West Indies player, Michael Holding took a dig at the Indian team for wearing black bands in memory of Ajit Wadekar, former Indian captain. Holding said, "Indian players are wearing the black band not because they are 0-2 down." This he said before he clarified the main reason behind the black band while commenting on the third match.
Remembering Ajit Wadekar, head coach Ravi Shastri told reporters on the eve of the third Test, "I knew Ajit very well from a very young age. He lived in the same building as I did and all I will say is that he was one of our finest captains and a great manager. When it came to man-management skills, he was as shrewd as anyone you will ever get as a captain."
Wadekar was the first Indian captain to lead the nation to a Test victory in England in 1971. On Wednesday, the 77-year-old passed away in Mumbai after battling prolonged illness. Team India observed a minute of silence in Nottingham remembering the great skipper.
