Sanchit Malik is indeed a proud brother as he shared on his Twitter handle the news of his sister Ekta Bhyan clinching the Gold at the World Para Athletics for the country! Unfurling the National Flag in Tunisia and watching it fly highest must have been a moment of unspeakable pride and joy for the Haryana girl.

It is true that a person truly loses their fight when they lose faith in themselves. A story of grit and determination, faith and passion has helped achieve Ekta her dreams gilded in gold that will shine as a beacon of hope for years to come! Her physical limitation of a wheelchair did not stop her dreams to take flight and she took flight with them transcending her disability. Ekta has cliched a gold in women's club throw F51 event and later added a bronze in the discus throw event.

Hailing from the State of Haryana, Ekta met a road accident in 2003 which injured her spinal cord and left her paralysed from her lower body. This single incident confined her to the wheelchair for the rest of her life. By 2014, Ekta had decided that she wanted to remain physically fit despite her confinement and started playing sports.

While undergoing two major operations and several months in rehabilitation could not have been easy, Ekta emerged stronger than before. Her inspiration came in the form of Amit Saroha, another GoSports Para Athlete who motivated and trained her in club throw and discus throw.

Her efforts have paid her back! She earned a Silver medal at the IPC Para Athletics Grand Prix in Berlin in 2016. Ekta was selected to represent India at the 2017 IPC Para Athletics World Championships, by the virtue of her performance (15.3m in Club throw | Rank – 7) (3.46m in Discus throw | Rank – 11) at the Selection Trials conducted in JLN Stadium in New Delhi in May 2018. And her haul did not stop there. She added a Silver medal in women’s club throw and finished fourth in women’s discus throw at the 2016, IPC Para Athletics Grand Prix, Berlin to her haul. Along with that, the champion has hallmarked the yellow metal in women’s club throw and bronze in women’s discus throw at 2016, Senior National Para Athletics Championships, Panchkula.

She has indeed set an example proving the adage- where there is a will, there is a way!
