With this win, Vinesh became the first woman to win a gold medal in wrestling for India at the Asian Games
After a gold by Bajrang Punia in the men's 65kg wrestling on Sunday, Vinesh Phogat made the country even more proud by clinching a gold in women's 50 kg freestyle category.
With this win, Vinesh became the first woman to win a gold medal in wrestling for India at the Asian Games.
Vinesh started her campaign against China's Yanan Sun, against whom Vinesh had suffered a heart-breaking defeat at the Rio Olympics in 2016. This time, however, Vinesh dominated and won the match 8-2. Her next match was against South Korea's Hyungjoo Kim which she won by technical superiority. Her semi-final lasted just 75 s as she moved into the final with a 'fitley'.
She won the gold by defeating Japan's Yuki Irie 6-2.
Vinesh had been a bronze medal-winner in the 48kg category at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. She had won back-to-back gold medals in the Commonwealth Games as well, at Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018.
