Asian Games 2018: Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal lose as India's challenge in badminton team events ends

Jakarta: The Indian badminton teams' hopes to win a medal at the Asian Games 2018 were dashed after both the men's and women's teams crashed out of the tournament. Both the men's and women's teams lost 1-3 in their respective quarter-finals. While the women lost to Japan, the men lost to Indonesia.

Among the women, Olympic medallist PV Sindhu was the only one who won for India. She beat Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in 41 minutes in the opening singles encounter by a scoreline of 21-18 21-19. 

N Sikki Reddy and Arathi Sunil then struggled and lost tamely 15-21 6-21 to Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota, allowing the Japanese to draw level.

In the crucial second women's singles, Saina Nehwal saved four match points in the second game, but eventually lost 11-21 25-23 16-21 after battling for one hour and 11 minutes against Nozomi Okuhara.

The Sindhu and Ashwini Ponappa duo lost the fourth rubber 13-21 12-21 to reigning Olympic champions Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi.

For the men, HS Prannoy won against Indonesia.

Kidambi Srikanth tried to give India an early lead in the men's quarter-finals, but lost 21-23 22-20 10-21 to Anthony Sinisuka Ginting. 

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty too failed to win against their opponents Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon from Indonesia.

It was Prannoy who helped the Indian cause by winning against Jonatan Christie of Indonesia by 21-15, 19-21, 21-19. However, Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy lost 14-21 18-21 to World No 9 pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto, taking India's score to one win against three losses.
