Asian Games 2018: Jinson Johnson races to 1,500-metre gold; Seema Punia bags discus bronze

Jakarta: India’s Jinson Johnson won his second medal at the ongoing Asian Games 2018 as he clinched gold in men’s 1,500m race.

The 27-year-old Johnson, who was defeated by compatriot Manjit Singh in the 800m event, made amends at the GBK Stadium on Thursday. He clocked 3:44.72 to bag 1,500m gold. Iran’s Amir Moradi (3:45.62) was second followed by Mohammed Tioualli (3:45.88) of Bahrain. Manjit finished fourth (3:46.57).

In the 800m, the army man from Kerala, was second to Manjit. Johnson was the favourite to win but he was stunned by Manjit.

This was India’s 12th gold and sixth from athletics. So far, the country has won 57 medals (12 gold, 20 silver, 25 bronze).

Also, the nation added one more medal on the last day of track and field events in Jakarta. Discus thrower Seema Punia took bronze with a mark of 62.26m. The 35-year-old had won gold in the last edition of the Games in Incheon.

China completed a one-two with Yang Chen (65.12m) and Bin Feng (64.25m) winning gold and silver respectively.

Since 1998, in each of the six editions of the Asian Games, top three positions in women’s discus have been shared by India and China.
