Asian Games 2018: Rowers make nation proud with gold and bronze medals

Palembang: The Indian rowers did the nation proud by winning one gold and two bronze medals at the ongoing Asian Games in Indonesia on Friday.

First, it was Dushyant Singh, despite being unwell, carried on to bag a bronze in men’s lightweight singles sculls. He finished third with a timing of 7:18.76 while Korea’s Hyunsu Park topped followed by Chun Gun Chiu of Hong Kong.

Dushyant’s commitment to the nation earned him high praise. He was not well but still continued in the competition to finish on the podium. During the medal ceremony, he threw up and had to be stretchered off.

It was a second consecutive bronze for Dushyant at Asian Games as he had finished on the podium in the last edition in Incheon.

The second bronze for India arrived in lightweight double sculls when Rohit Kumar and Bhagwan Singh clocked 7:04.61 to take the third spot.

Japanese duo of Miyaura Masayuki and Takeda Masahiro won the gold. Korean’s Kim Byunghoon and Lee Minhyuk claimed silver.

After two bronze medals, India won gold through Sawarn Singh, Dattu Baban Bhokanal, Om Prakash and Sukhmeet Singh in men’s quadruple sculls team event.

They were on top with a timing of 6:17.13. Indonesia took silver while Thailand bagged bronze.

So far, India has 21 medals (five gold, four silver, 12 bronze) in Indonesia and is currently placed ninth in the table.
