Jakarta: After winning two historic bronze medals at the Asian Games 2018, India’s campaign in table tennis ended with three players losing in the pre-quarterfinal stage of the singles competition here on Friday.
Achanta Sharath Kamal, G Sathiyan and Manika Batra lost their respective matches in the Round of 16 at JIExpo Hall.
The 23-year-old Manika lost to China’s world number five Wang Manyu 1-4 (2-11, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6, 4-11).
Chinese Taipei's Chuang Chihyuan defeated Sharath Kamal 4-2 (11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 14-16, 11-9, 11-9) while Sathiyan was beaten by Japan's Matsudaira Kenta 1-4 (11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 6-11, 10-12).
Earlier, India had bagged two bronze medals in table tennis. Men’s team (Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan, Manav Thakkar, Anthony Amalraj and Harmeet Desai) and mixed doubles (Manika and Sharath) finished on the podium after losing in the semi-finals.
For the first time in the history of Asian Games, Indian paddlers had won medals. The sport was introduced in 1958 and India had to wait for 60 years to finish on the podium.
