Asian Games 2018: India settles for bronze in men's hockey, but beating Pakistan a matter of pride

Jakarta: Indian men’s hockey team defeated Pakistan 2-1 to win the bronze medal at the ongoing Asian Games here on Saturday.

After a heartbreaking loss to Malaysia in the semi-finals, India returned to winning ways to finish on the podium.

Akashdeep Singh opened the scoring in the third minute and Harmanpreet Singh doubled the lead in the 50th minute. Pakistan pulled one back through Muhammad Atiq two minutes later.

In the last edition of the Games, India and Pakistan had battled in the final with the former winning gold.

On Friday, India women lost the final to Japan 1-2.

This year's Asian Games has been India's best in terms of medals with 69 (15 gold, 24 silver, 30 bronze). The previous best was 65 in 2010 in Guangzhou.
