Asian Games 2018: Hima Das and Muhammed Anas win 400m silver; nation’s tally rises to 35

Jakarta: There was good news for Indian athletes from 400m events as Hima Das and Muhammed Anas won silver in women’s and men’s races respectively at the ongoing Asian Games on Sunday.

The 18-year-old Hima clocked 50.79 seconds, a new national record, to finish second at the GBK Stadium.

Salwa Naser of Bahrain topped the race with a Games record of 50.09 seconds while Elina Mikhina of Kazakhstan came third in a time of 52.63 seconds.

Another Indian in the fray, Nirmla was at fourth place as she clocked 52.96 seconds.

On the same track, few minutes later, Anas finished second with a time of 45.69 seconds. Qatar’s Abdalelah won gold in a time of 44.89s while Ali Khamis (45.70s) took bronze.

On Saturday, Hima had broken a 14-year-old national record as she qualified for the 400m final in at time of 51.00 seconds. The previous record was in the name of Manjit Kaur (51.05s) set in Chennai in 2004. On Sunday, Hima bettered her own mark.

Earlier, India’s Dutee Chand qualified for the 100m women’s final with a time of 11.43 seconds. She finished third in the semi-finals.

India now has 35 medals (seven gold, nine silver, 19 bronze) and is placed at ninth position in the table.
