Jakarta: On the 12th day of the Asian Games 2018, India won five athletics medals, including two gold, but there was major heartbreak as men’s hockey team lost a dramatic semi-final penalty shootout to Malaysia.
Jinson Johnson (men’s 1,500m) and women’s 4x400m relay team won gold as India’s tally in athletics rose to 19 medals (seven gold, 10 silver, 2 bronze), the most for the country in one discipline at the ongoing Games in Indonesia. The track and field events ended on Thursday.

The next best medal haul for India came from shooting with nine (two gold, four silver, three bronze).
The quartet of Hima Das, Poovamma Raju, Saritaben Gayakwad and Vismaya Koroth gave the nation its 13th gold. This was India’s fifth consecutive Asian Games relay gold. They had won in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014. Poovamma was part of the team that won in the previous edition in Incheon.

For Hima, this was her third medal at the Games. She had earlier won silver in women’s 400m and mixed 4x400m relay.
The men’s 4x400m relay team (Muhammed Anas, Arokia Rajiv, Dharun Ayyasamy and Kunhu Muhammed Puthanpurakkal) won silver while Seema Punia (discus throw) and PU Chitra (1,500m) bagged a bronze each.
The biggest disappointment of the day came in hockey as the men’s team, after dominating the group stage with a record 76 goals, were beaten 6-7 in the semi-final penalty shootout sudden death by Malaysia.
The defending champions had entered the knockout phase with an unbeaten record but were stopped by Malaysia in a thriller.
Now, India will face Pakistan in the bronze medal match on Saturday. Pakistan lost to Japan 0-1 in the second semi-final.
In table tennis men's singles, G Sathiyan defeated Indonesia's Santoso Ficky Supit 4-2 to advance to the Round of 16.
India ended Day 12 with 59 medals (13 gold, 21 silver, 25 bronze).
