Earlier, several senior Congress leaders staged a sit-in protest seeking Rahul Gandhi to continue as their party president.
New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (July 3) said he is no longer the president of his party. He further said that his party should decide on a new party chief without delay.
Speaking to reporters in the Parliament, Rahul said, "The party should decide on the new president quickly without further delay, I am not in this process. I have already submitted my resignation, and I am no longer the party president. The CWC should convene a meeting at the earliest and decide."
Earlier on May 25, the Wayanad lawmaker decided to step down from his post at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, taking the overall responsibility for the Congress' poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha election.
However, his resignation was unanimously rejected, and several chief ministers of the states ruling under the Congress met Rahul and urged him to continue to lead the party.
While several senior Congress leaders made earnest attempts to convince Rahul to rethink about his decision, he had remained unfazed.
In the 17th Lok Sabha election, Congress won 52 seats, which is just eight more than what the party won in 2014.
Recently, party leaders, including AICC secretaries Mahender Joshi, Naseeb Singh and other leaders including Delhi working president Rajesh Lilothia, Shobha Oza, Jagdish Tytler along with party activists held a sit-in protest, seeking Rahul to continue as party chief.
