The coastal town of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu turns out to be a crucial constituency this election season. The BJP and the Congress face each other here. This was the lone seat that the BJP had won in 2014.
Chennai: The battle in Kanyakumari constituency will be between Union minister of state Pon Radhakrishnan of the BJP and H Vasanthakumar of the Congress.
Pon Radhakrishnan, won against H Vasanthakumar paving the way for the BJP to make an entry into Tamil Nadu, back in 2014. This was the lone seat that the BJP had won that year.
The 2014 Lok Sabha election also witnessed the two same candidates fighting against each other, but Vasanthakumar failed to make it to the finish line.
Vasanthakumar, a consumer durables baron and a TV channel owner, is now confident of another win. The BJP and the RSS too have had a strong footprint here since the 1960s. The battle carries prestige for Radhakrishnan, while holding the promise of fulfilling the Parliamentary dream for Vasanthakumar.
Kanyakumari tops the list of the state’s literacy rate. However, unemployment is reportedly high due to alleged lack of development of cottage or agro-based industries.
The other crucial factor in the region is that of fishermen issues wherein they have expressed dissent over the construction of the Enayam port project.
Fishermen are the deciding factor in the region. Kanyakumari banks on close to 2 lakh voters just from the fishing community alone. Farmers too have expressed displeasure in the region after much of the agriculture fields were encroached for widening of roads.
