The chief judicial magistrate of Patna has served summons to the Congress chief with regard to the defamation suit lodged by deputy chief minister Sushil Modi. Modi had moved court against Gandhi’s controversial statement saying ‘all Modis are thieves’
New Delhi: A judicial complaint was filed against Congress president Rahul Gandhi and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday for allegedly asking the crowd gathered for a rally in Bihar’s Samastipur to chant ‘chowkidar chor hai’.
An advocate filed the complaint in the Ara civil court.
In a double whammy for Gandhi, the chief judicial magistrate of Patna has served summons to the Congress chief with regard to the defamation suit lodged by deputy chief minister Sushil Modi. Modi had moved court against Gandhi’s controversial statement saying ‘all Modis are thieves’.
Gandhi has to appear in court on May 20.
Meanwhile, earlier, the Supreme Court had last Tuesday issued a contempt notice to the Congress president. The apex court had rejected his expression of regret for misinterpreting its decision to include a newspaper report as admissible evidence in the Rafale case. Rahul had touted the decision as to the apex court's verdict that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a 'chor' (thief). The court rebuked him as the case has not reached any conclusion.
Rahul had last Monday regretted in SC for getting carried away "in election zeal". He was responding to the contempt petition filed by BJP MP and lawyer Meenakshi Lekhi against his comment on the Rafale controversy in which he has repeatedly said that the Supreme Court has deemed PM Modi a 'chor'.
The Supreme Court also rejected the plea to close the contempt case by the Congress. Rahul has not been exempted from personal appearance either.
