Right after joining BSP, Ali said, "Even when I was in JD(S), I never asked for anything. It was HD Deve Gowda who decided what work I would do. I have come here after taking blessings and permission of Gowda."

He also stressed on the fact how staying in JD(S) was not helping him in any way to work for Uttar Pradesh, hinting at how he was up for playing a big role in the state. Amroha, where he is rumoured to be contesting from, falls under the communally sensitive western UP.

BSP which couldn't win a single seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls is contesting the general elections this time in UP, in alliance with the Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.
