Veteran CPM leader P Jayarajan also stated that LDF is a secular force in the state, but many Keralites refused to believe it.
Vadakara: Veteran Kerala CPM leader P Jayarajan told media that the LDF suffered a setback in the Lok Sabha election because religious fundamentalists spread the message that the Congress is capable of resisting the BJP in the country. Jayarajan also stated that the LDF is a secular force in the state, however many Keralites refused to believe the claim.
He told media that a booth level inspection will be conducted to find out the cause of the failure of the Left government in the state. Jayarajan said that the LDF's failure is not because of the anti-Left wave in the state.
Even though the party lost in the Lok Sabha election, Jayarajan said the expected votes were lost as the Muslim League, SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami conducted campaigns among the minorities highlighting that “only the Congress can help the country by stopping the BJP from coming back to power.”
Congress leader K Muraleedharan defeated CPM's P Jayarajan in Vadakara constituency, Kannur by 84,633 votes. Muraleedharan secured 5,26,755 votes and Jayarajan received 4,42,092 votes. The UDF won 19 of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala. AM Arif of the LDF won in Alappuzha.
Vadakara comprises of 7 assembly segments which are Nadapuram, Thalassery, Koothuparamba, Kuttiyadi, Koyilandy and Perambra. The constituency has been a Congress party's stronghold and has long been represented by KP Unnikrishnan.
