Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has stated that a probe will be conducted into the death of Karunanidhi. He said that it is suspicious that Karunanidhi was unable to speak for about two years and suspected his son Stalin
Nilgiris: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) on Monday blamed the DMK president MK Stalin for not taking care of his father and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. He said that the “government is prepared to order a probe into the death” of Karunanidhi.
EPS alleged that Karunanidhi was denied better treatment abroad. “There is a question as to why the senior political leader was not taken overseas for adequate treatment,” he said.
He further went on state that had Karunanidhi been alive, Stalin would not have become president of the DMK.
Karunanidhi died on August 7, 2018 after weeks of hospitalisation. However, the senior leader had been bedridden for months before that and was confined to his Gopalapuram residence. He died at the age of 94.
EPS's charge comes just after the DMK had categorically highlighted that it would probe the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa who passed away at a private hospital in Chennai after being admitted for 75 days. Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2016.
The one-man judicial panel, probing the circumstances leading to her death, has drawn flak from the high court for not being focused on its job.
The commission of inquiry was constituted after doubts were raised by present deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam (OPS) over the circumstances of her death. The commission has already been given many extensions.
Tamil Nadu's 39 Parliamentary constituencies will witness a contest between the two alliances – one led by the DMK and other by the AIADMK.
In 2014, while the AIADMK had swept the polls securing 37 seats, DMK drew a blank. However, much has changed since then.
Polling to the 39 Parliamentary constituencies and 18 of the 21 vacant Assembly constituencies will be held on April 18.
